Dream
Monterustico is a dream to protect and revive an ancient viticultural area of the Langhe, affected by incessant abandonment.
Monterustico’s mission is to rediscover, safeguard and share ancient vineyards and grape varieties, starting with Dolcetto, in this enclave guarded by the rustic mountain par excellence: Monviso.
Area
We are in Farigliano, a border land of ancient exchanges, a small village overlooking the Alps and the Tanaro river, immersed in an anarchic nature. Steep vineyards, on sedimentary limestones, caressed by Alpine winds
Once known for its majestic Dolcetto wines and prosperous trades, the Dogliani region has suffered a drastic abandonment of viticulture over the last twenty years.
Regardless of the extensive boundaries of the appellation, parcels are scarce, scattered and immersed in a complex biodiversity.
The mitigating proximity of the river Tanaro and the presence of cool Alpine winds create a unique microclimate for Dolcetto, allowing for a gentle ripening of the grapes and the development of delicate aromas.
Farigliano
The Monterustico estate is located in Farigliano: a rural village located 16 kilometres (10 miles) south of Barolo, at the heart of the appellation and halfway between Dogliani and Clavesana.
Vine growing and winemaking are witnessed in the village ever since 1230, in a document by the marquis Manfredo III of Saluzzo.
For centuries a border land, Farigliano’s history is studded with clashes and exchanges of civilizations: Ligurians and Romans, French and Spanish, the Savoias and their enemies.
Vineyards
The soils in Farigliano are the bottom of an ancient sea that rose about 15 million years ago. They are part of the ”Formazioni di Lequio", so they are clayey marl patches, mainly composed of silt and decidedly calcareous.
We divide our vineyards in three zones.
North of the Fosso del Garino
Raising from 350 up to 530 mt. asl southward and towards Clavesana : the Sciondini, Archisa, Gené, Corsaletto, Cornole, Riviera and Zovetto which gives fruitier and more taut wines.
Slope of Monterustico and Bricco Rosso
At approx. 300-350 mt asl from Dogliani towards Farigliano: Bricco Rosso, Monterustico, Taricchi and Garbiana. These sites provide fruity, juicy and harmonious wines. The Monterustico vineyard is marked by a signature ferrous tone.
The crest of Carpeneta and Casabianca
The lower slopes overlook the Tanaro with alluvial soils that are particularly rich in skeleton (Pietra del Tanaro), thus providing exquisite aromatics and minerality.
